Connecting to CCSDWireless Network

As of June 1, 2017, COSIGNO/COSIGNORADIUS wireless networks will be replaced by a more user-friendly wireless network called CCSDWireless.

BYOD changes for the 2017-2018 school year include the following:

1. Staff & Students (Only)
   • CCSDWireless (New BYOD Network):
     1. Users will need a password to join the CCSDWireless network. (Ask your librarian for the password).
   • User Login:
     1. Students- Can now login using their Student ID #
     2. Staff – Login using their Badge ID
   • Internet Filter:
     1. Users will need to install the internet filter certificate.  This will be available on the CCSD Wireless Network landing page after you login to the network or via QR code.

   Guests

   • CCSDGuest:
     1. Guests will need a password to join the CCSDGuest network. (Ask the librarian for the password).
   • User Login:
     1. Guest users will need to register using their personal email address.  They will need complete the registration process using the password sent to their personal email address.
   • Internet Filter:
     1. Users will need to install the internet filter certificate.  This will be available on the CCSD Wireless Network landing page after they login to the network or via QR code.
     2. Staff and Students who join this network will not have the same internet filter access they have while logged into CCSDWireless.

Record and Mix Sound Using Audacity to Enhance Presentations

Audacity® is free, open source, cross-platform audio software for multi-track recording and editing.  You can download the version that is installed on Wheeler Library computers from SourceForge, or find the latest version for your device offered through AudacityTeam.org.  Use Wheeler Library’s quick start guide to learn the basics of recording, playing back, editing and saving project files and finalized WAV or MP3 files.  Become a pro by reading the manual or viewing tutorials to learn about advanced features, such as noise reduction, fade in, or studio fade out.

With Audacity you can record narration for a multi-media project, edit out the narrator’s errors and then add a track with imported background music from your computer’s music library. The final audio file can then be used within other applications such as Windows Movie Maker, PowerPoint, or VoiceThread.  You may schedule the small group room in Wheeler Library to record, or talk to a library media specialist for assistance getting familiar with the basic features of Audacity.

Using Snapchat to Download a Wheeler Library eBook

Many of our eBooks can be download to your device for offline access, which can save you from consuming valuable data or allow you to continue reading in a dead spot. Instructions below, provided by Kristen Hibbert, will guide you through the process of using Snapchat to download and locate an eBook on your device, watch for differences between Android and iOS devices.

Downloading

Method 1:

Step 1: Open Snapchat

Step 2: Hold your phone up to the QR code of the book you want.

Step 3: Make sure the code for the book is in focus (for ABDO books you have to get closer to the code before the phone can read it properly).

Step 4: Take a snap of the QR code.

Notice: it doesn’t work quite like snapcodes, where you can just have the phone view it. For this method, a picture must be taken.

Step 5: Click “Open Link” on the popup that appears. If there is no popup, repeat step 4, or try Method 2. Save the book to your phone (Android only), or save the book to your Reading List (iOS only). Alternatively, you can copy the link to your phone notes (It helps to put the name of the book in the note with the link).

Method 2:

Method 2 works the same way as method one, except at step 4. Instead of taking a snap of the QR code, press and hold on the screen where the QR code is. If this does not create a popup, try again, changing the distance between the phone and the code, or try Method 1.

Reading a Saved eBook

Saved to Phone:  (Android)

The book should be in the downloads folder of the phone. If not, see a librarian for further assistance, or try another method of saving.

Saved to Reading List:  (iOS)

On your iOS device, go to Safari. Select the book icon, then the glasses icon at the top middle. Find the book link in your reading list, and select it.

Copied to Notes:

Find the note you with the link. Click the link, or copy and paste the link into your desired browser.

New eBook Collections from GALILEO with over 150,000 Books – All Available All the Time!

We have just received access to two new eBook collections through GALILEO, eBook High School Collection and eBook Academic Collection. A great feature of the GALILEO eBook collections is that multiple users can access the same book simultaneously, so there is no waiting for the book to be available, like you may experience for eBooks offered through public library eBook collections.  You and a friend, or a whole book club, can be reading the same book for free!  Search for books for leisure reading, or research, by exploring the eBook collection databases which are linked under the General Research Database section on WheelerLibrary.com. These collections contain over 150,000 books; if you would like to know more about searching the collections, creating a link to a book, or linking to a page within a book, stop by Wheeler Library for assistance.  For off-campus access, you will need the GALILEO password.

Free Microsoft Office Software and Online Access to Office 365 with 1TB of Cloud Storage!

Office 365 allows each student to install Microsoft Office on up to five PCs or Macs and five mobile devices, and provides access to Microsoft Office online applications.  Parental consent is required before students can access Office 365 applications.  Parents may provide consent through Synergy ParentVUE, or by responding to the parental consent email from Office365ParentalConsent@cobbk12.org.  View the instructional video for further information about providing consent through ParentVUE; you may contact Judy.Collins@Cobbk12.org for assistance with setting up a Synergy ParentVUE account.  Once a parent responds to the consent email, selecting option 1, the student may gain access to all of the resources by signing in at login.microsoftonline.com, using the following format: First.Last@students.cobbk12.org and their CCSD computer login password.

OneDrive is one of the many useful features that come with online access to CCSD’s Office 365. When students use their @students.cobbk12.org account to access OneDrive, they have 1TB of storage in the cloud. They can easily save files to their OneDrive from the menus in Microsoft Office 2013 programs, such as Word or PowerPoint. Files saved to OneDrive may be retrieved on any device with Internet access. Students may visit the Media Center and ask Dr. Bryan for a demonstration of Office 365 Online Apps or for assistance using OneDrive for storing files in the cloud.  Further information about getting started may be found on WheelerLibrary.com’s Technology Tools and Tips page.

Logins for School Computers and StudentVUE Access to Grades

Passwords for students who attended a Cobb County School last year remain the same. Newly enrolled students must log in to a school computer with their student ID number and the initial password happy and then create their own password.  Once a student has set up their own password on a school computer it will become their password for StudentVue, allowing students to check on grades for each of their classes.  Synergy StudentVue can be accessed under quick links on the side of WheelerHigh.com or WheelerLibrary.com.  Students who are unable to logon to a school computer may request assistance from a library staff member.  Parents may contact Judy.Collins@cobbk12.org for assistance with logging in to ParentVue to view their student’s grades.    

Use Google Drive to Organize Computer Files and Have Access to Your Work at School and at Home

Files created in, or uploaded to, Google Drive are available everywhere that you have internet access. All Wheeler students have an @WheelerHigh.com Google Drive account ready for use.  To get started go to Drive.Google.com and login using the following format: first.last@wheelerhigh.com for your email address, and your student number followed by whs as the password (i.e., john.doe@wheelerhigh.com, 12345whs).  You may create folders to organize work for different classes and projects.  Simple instructions for new users of Google Drive are available on WheelerLibrary.com’s Technology Tips webpage.  Wheeler Library staff members are happy to provide assistance if you have any questions.

Read and Review for a Chance to Win a Kindle Fire

Cobb County Public Library is sponsoring a summer reading program for students from local schools. Between May 26^th and July 22^nd, students may submit up to 10 book reviews through the CCPL form at cobbcat.org/teenreview. Each entry will be entered for a chance to win one of four Kindle Fires. February Contest Winner!

Congratulations to 10^th grader Amara Holland, the Media Center’s February contest winner!  Of the 337 contest entries, Amara’s guess of 584 chocolate kisses was the only guess of the exact number.

Be sure to hop into the Media Center in March to check out a book.  Students checking out a book will be entered to win a chocolate bunny!
